Review: Hare Krishna Guest House in Paharganj, Delhi - Yahoo Voices - voices.yahoo.com

If you're looking for a budget hotel in Paharganj, you may want to consider the Hare Krishna Guest House. If you are a light sleeper, this is not the budget hotel for you!

Location

Hare Krishna Guest House is located in the Paharganj Bazaar. If you walk from the New Delhi Train Station (NDLS), it will be on your right after a ten to fifteen minute walk. The guest house is closer to the other end of the bazaar. If you have a lot of luggage you will want to employ an auto rickshaw to bring you to the guesthouse. Just make sure your rickshaw driver doesn't bring you to a different guesthouse where he gets commission!

Paharganj is a backpacker's haunt, and the streets of the bazaar are lined with hawkers who will try to draw your attention to their wares. It's a convenient area because it's so close to the train station, and it's located between Old and New Delhi.

Rooms

There are a variety of rooms for different prices, including singles (300-350 rupees), doubles (350-450 rupees) and triples (400-595 rupees). An extra bed for an extra person costs 50 rupees. Some rooms have private bathrooms and others do not. Extra blankets are given for free in the winter season, but the blankets are a bit ratty and too thin to really keep you warm. Rooms are fairly clean, as far as budget hotels go.

When my husband and I stayed in Hare Krishna Guest House, our biggest problems were the noise and the cold. None of the rooms are AC, so you'd probably only want to stay in this hotel during fall and spring seasons. Winter is too cold and summer is too hot! Although we appreciated their service, waking up to the sound of an electronic floor buffer at 5:00am is not the most pleasant alarm. The walls are paper thin, and since we had a communal sink outside our room we could regularly hear people brushing their teeth or recovering from an excess of alcohol. Our bathroom had a big hole near the roof that led into our neighbor's bathroom, so we could hear loud gargling and hacking in the morning.

Our first mattress was rock hard, so we asked to change it with another one. The second one was slightly better but still left us sore in the mornings.

Food

Serving up Thai, Indian and Continental dishes, the rooftop restaurant is one of the best things about Hare Krishna Guest House. Prices are affordable and dishes are tasty.

Service

As this guesthouse serves mostly foreign guests, it offered a variety of services. The man at the front desk spoke excellent English, and there was a cozy lounge downstairs filled with travel guides and books. The guesthouse can book further travel or tours for you if you'd like. The staff was always friendly and helpful.

If you're a heavy sleeper planning to travel to New Delhi in autumn or spring, you may want to consider the Hare Krishna Guest House. It's safer and cleaner than many of the other options in Paharganj, but it's far from a romantic getaway or a relaxing retreat. Check out the guesthouse website here:
