How to Pack for Winter Travel

I am about to start packing for a trip to Oslo, Norway which is at the beginning of December. It gets really cold up there and even though I am quite looking forward to it, I know that packing will be a challenge. What on earth do you pack so that you can stay warm in such a cold climate?

Luckily, I have a lot of experience with cold weather. Once I give this some thought, I know I'll have a suitcase filled with all the right things. Keep in mind that this isn't a comprehensive packing list, rather a guide on extra things to think about when you pack.

Packing the Toiletries

I started with this because it's the easiest to think about. I'm basically not going to do that much that's different. The only change is that I have a warming foot lotion made from cinnamon that I got at a Lush Cosmetics store. I bet that will come in very handy. My feet have a tendency to get cold.

Hiking and Skiing Socks

You know those special socks that are designed to keep your foot warm and dry when you're skiing or hiking in colder weather? Well, I have several of those and I wear them all the time, even with my fashion boots. They make such a difference! I suggest you do the same. Buy a few pairs and see how warm your feet are. Once you try them, you may not even want your old socks!

Think in Terms of Layers

No matter if you're going for business or pleasure, when you get dressed think in terms of layering your clothes. I know, most of us think of this as a concept just for people who spend a lot of time in the "Great Outdoors" but the technique also comes in handy even if you're just walking around the city. I always try to wear a long sleeve shirt, cardigan, and my jacket. If it's colder, you might want to add in another layer.

Tricks to Stay Warm

My feet are especially susceptible to the cold so I like to pack dried cayenne powder so I can put it in my boots. They also sell special show warmers at most sporting stores. Again, you can even use them with your fashion boots! Another trick is to suck on ginger lozenges. The ginger is very warming. I'd pack at the minimum the cayenne pepper because most of us have some lying around the house anyway.

Warm Shoes

I have a pair of lined fashion boots made just for the cold weather. If you have a pair of warm shoes that look fashionable, great. If you don't, just pack extra socks. You may want to layer your socks in this case.

So, when you pack for your trip, keep these suggestions in mind. It is better to be a little over prepared than to be completely cold!
