Where to Pick Up an Application Form
Application forms are available from local authorities, Post Offices and SPT Travel Centres in Scotland. A recent colour photograph will be required when you apply for a National Entitlement Card, including evidence of your age or disability, and proof of address.
How to Use the National Entitlement Card
When you have been issued with a National Entitlement Card, you will need to show your card to the bus driver, who will check the card's validity. But this process is changing with the use of electronic ticketing machines that are becoming a more common sight on the buses. If there is an electronic ticketing machine on the bus, place your National Entitlement Card on the ticket machine with your photograph facing the driver.
What Does the National Entitlement Card Look Like?
The National Entitlement Card has your photograph and the name of your Local Authority on the front, along with the expiration date. On the bottom right-hand side, you will see a large 'C' symbol. This symbol shows that you are entitled to free Scotland-wide bus travel. Cards that do not have the 'C' symbol do not allow passengers to travel free of charge. Other symbols include the number '1' along with a '+' sign. This indicates that you are entitled to ride the bus for free with a companion, who can also join you for free, but only if they will be accompanying you.
Can Others Use Your National Entitlement Card?
Only the photograph-bearer can use their National Entitlement Card. The card is not transferable. Allowing someone else to use your card is fraud and can lead to the cancellation of your National Entitlement Card, along with your entitlement to free Scotland-wide travel.
The National Entitlement Card offers the holders the right to travel free of charge anywhere in Scotland, provided the card is valid and up to date.
