Auto news on Youtube Feb 18 2019

Every journey has its beginnings. And my little trip with

David Coulthard also starts at the very beginning.

I have something for you!

You are such a great artist!

No, it's not me. My 7-year-old son drew this for you.

He's got real potential.

It's supposed to be you as a kid. You can keep this.

Thank you very much.

No worries.

You are always one decision away from a totally different life.

Who changed the game for you when you were a kid?

My father changed the game for me

because I was racing cars, enjoying myself,

and I thought things couldn't be better than that.

But he had a vision that I had the potential to become a professional.

Children are our future. But not every child has the same opportunities.

How do you change the game for kids with the career you had?

Children are born for the love and joy and happiness.

And the more you can stimulate them and I think sport is a fantastic way to do so

and a great thing about Laureus

and all of the various ambassadors and academy members.

They are completely understanding of how lucky they are to be professionals.

There's nothing like being around kids. You have kids yourselves,

I have got a ten-year-old son. They just fill you with so much energy.

They drain your energy of course.

But it's because they challenge you. And I learn from my

ten-year-old – of course, I guide him in certain ways – but I think

it's the sharing of creating opportunities which is so fantastic.

As a Formula 1 driver, you always live on the edge.

Every fraction of a second counts. Full throttle. Full speed ahead. Adrenaline. Everything.

Do you sometimes feel like taking it slow?

Well, I think I do take it slow today because I no longer race in formula 1.

It's been 10 years since I was a grand prix driver.

So how about taking it slow right now?

Are we going for a romantic walk together?

A father always has to be some kind of role model. Whether you want it or not.

How important is it to take on responsibility for the generation of tomorrow?

They need opportunity, they need to explore, they need to find their own capabilities,

whether it's their physical capabilities, through sports or their mental capabilities

to really understand how to best develop in their life.

The awards are just around the corner.

Are we going to see David Coulthard wearing a kilt on the red carpet again?

Absolutely. When I go to a black tie function it's a perfect opportunity

for me to reconnect with my Scottish roots. So I will be wearing the kilt.

You want me to show you how to play the bagpipes?

Why not? You know how to do it?

Yeah...

I get very emotional when the bagpipes are playing.

Really? I can't wait to see it.

I've seen everything now. I didn't even know that this existed!

I think the people are leaving Monaco though, that's the only problem.

That is very cool. I'm gonna get that.

Thank you!

Mercedes-Benz X 350 d 4MATIC Power v Volkswagen Amarok V6 Ultimate 580 2019 Comparison - Duration: 6:40.

Guten tag mate  Who would have ever thought we'd find ourselves broiling in the outback summer sun deciding which German 3

0-litre turbo-diesel V6 is the King of the Aussie 4x4 dual-cab heap. Arriving in the desert north-west of the Flinders Ranges via Stuttgart (but built in Barcelona alongside the Nissan Navara upon which it is based) comes the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz X 350 d 4MATIC Power — all $80,000 worth before you add options and on-road costs! From Wolfsburg via Hannover comes the Volkswagen Amarok V6 580 Ultimate

Amarok has been around for a long time in Australia, but this one is the most powerful (with provisos we'll explain later) and torquiest in the class

VW calls it the Big Bad Wolf. It's not quite as expensive as the Benz but it will still make a decent dent in your bank accountant

So, two powerful, expensive Germans versus the cruel Aussie outback. Achtung cobber! Time to get rolling

Why are we comparing the Mercedes-Benz X 350 d and Volkswagen Amarok Ultimate?  Bragging rights — it's as simple as that

These two are the most powerful and gruntiest 4x4 dual cab utes on the market, as well as two of the most expensive (see below for more on that)

The Benz makes 190kW and 550Nm from its DOHC single-turbo diesel V6 mated to a seven-speed auto, averages 8

8L/100km and accelerates from 0-100km/h in a speedy – for a ute – 7.9sec. The Amarok also employs a 3

0-litre V6 diesel endowed with a single turbo, but in this case mated to an eight-speed auto

The power claim is 190kW, but that will climb to 200kW for 10sec on overboost (from third gear with more than 70 per cent throttle), topping the Benz for class bragging rights if little else

There's no contest when it comes to torque though. At 580Nm (hence the name), the Amarok is clearly number one

The fuel consumption claim is 8.9L/00km and the claim for the 0-100km-sprint is 7

3sec. In our experience the acceleration times were more believable than the consumption claims – shock! Fuel use drifted into the 12s across a combination of freeway, highway, dirt road, dirt track and technical off-road sections

How much do the Mercedes-Benz X-Class and Volkswagen Amarok cost?  Before options or on-road costs, the Benz will set you back a hefty $79,415

This is the flagship model in the X-Class range, yet our test car still added black leather seat trim (up from the Artico artificial stuff) for $1750 and white metallic paint for $950

It also added a $1990 Style Pack that included privacy glass, a powered sliding window in the rear windscreen, side steps, roof rails and 18-inch alloy wheels (19s are standard)

Yes, are you still mulling that — an $80,000 vehicle where power rear windows are optional

Good Lord.  Naturally, no ute is complete without accessories; so there's an $899 bedliner, $1551 silver sports bar and a $2063 towing kit

All up (still before ORCs)? $86,268. Good Lord! The Amarok starts at $71,990 and adds Iridium Grey metallic paint for $610 to reposition at $72,600 before ORCs

So, advantage Amarok. But be aware the Benz comes with autonomous emergency braking, active lane keeping assist that not only detects drift but corrects the steering, a surround view camera and seven airbags

The Amarok looks pretty poor in safety terms by comparison; it gets front and front-side airbags and a reversing camera… That's it

In terms of other equipment both have dual-zone climate control, satellite navigation, cruise control, power-operated front seats, all-round disc brakes, LED headlights and automatic transmission paddle shifters

The Mercedes-Benz X 350 alone has rear air-con vents, keyless start, voice control, multiple driving modes that affect the behaviour of engine, transmission and the stop/start system, as well as low range gearing for serious off-road work

The Volkswagen Amarok Ultimate comes standard with 20-inch alloys (but we tested it on 18s more suited to off-roading), better quality Nappa leather seat trim, a sports bar, side steps, a spray-on UV-resistant bed cover, a (small) touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and reach as well as rake steering column adjustment

Another difference can be found in their rear suspensions; where the Amarok rides on orthodox leaf springs, the Mercedes-Benz uses coils

Crunch the numbers and the X-Class has a slight edge. Both can tow 3500kg braked and fit an 1165 x 1165mm Australian pallet

But the X 350 can carry 1010kg versus 836kg (in theory anyway). In terms of back-up, the X-class comes with a three-year/unlimited km warranty

Service intervals are 20,000km or one-year. Service plans vary in their up-front costs, from $2555 over three years

As of January 1, the Amarok has a five-year/unlimited km warranty. Service intervals are 15,000km/12 months and cost $1835 for the first three years

What does the Mercedes-Benz X-Class and Volkswagen Amarok do well?  Well, the Mercedes-Benz X 350 d actually feels like a Benz for a start, which is more that can be said for its four-cylinder X 250 sibling

While the four-cylinder X-Class retains the Nissan Navara's drivetrain, the X 350 has a Benz engine, transmission and permanent 4MATIC 4x4 (including low range gearing and locking rear diff)

It simply drives more like a Benz. That means it steers, rides and handles with more authority and comfort — although severe corrugations still work it over, especially without a big load in the back

If you are planning big loads then make sure you give the coil rear-end a good workout because it has struggled with them in the Nissan and the X 250

The Benz is also the better vehicle off-road thanks to low range, which gives it that extra degree of control in severe off-road conditions compared to the VW's off-road mode

Give the Amarok credit through, scrambling around lifting wheels on the steep, rocky slopes of Mt Samuel in the Flinders Ranges, it got everywhere the Benz went, but just took a little more effort to do it

It was a close-run thing though. The Mercedes-Benz X-Class has better clearance entering an obstacle, the Amarok does better exiting

The X 350 d's hill descent control can be operated independently, whereas the Amarok's is integral to the off-road mode

Both of the V6 turbo-diesel utes kept reactivating their parking sensors… Very annoying

Another thing the Mercedes-Benz X 350 d does really well is stay hushed in the cabin

By ute standards this is a calm, quiet and pleasant place to be. Rear seat passengers also get more room than in the VW

The Benz does feel that bit more solid than the Volkswagen even though it weighs slightly less (2190kg versus 2244kg)

They are both porkers! Despite that, the Amarok goes fast in a straight-line, certainly faster than the Benz

The Volkswagen V6 engine is a free-spinner by diesel standards and launches hard

At the top end, the Benz is making ground, but the VW has the X-Class covered for traffic light grands prix and mid-range bursts

The Amarok also handles really well on or off-road, riding the bumps comfortably and handling well by the standards of the class

It's also pretty refined from a noise, vibration and harshness perspective. The Amarok has more storage options in the cabin, with plenty of handy bins and things

The flock lining in the door pockets is a nice touch. I'd give its bucket seats the edge as well, thanks to better side support

What could the Mercedes-Benz X-Class and Volkswagen Amarok do better?  The Mercedes-Benx X 350d has really bad tip-in throttle lag, just press and wait and wait and, go

Very annoying and a fault almost bad enough to cost it this comparison test on that basis alone

One thing that saved it is the hesitation evaporates in low-range and isn't as bad in high-range if you engage sport mode

The interior, like the X 250, remans entirely underwhelming. Hey, by ute standards it's decent, but for an $80K anything, I expect better than hard surfaces, a pauper ambience and almost nowhere to put anything

The latter issue not helped by the floor-mounted transmission lever (Benz usually mounts them on the steering column these days)

But the VW fights back – so to speak. The lack of safety features, no low range and a pretty uninspiring cabin work against it – the parking brake on the wrong side of the centre console is an annoyance

At least the Amarok has the excuse of being eight years old!  Both of them are way over-priced

Bloody hell, a simple ladder frame with a drivetrain and body bolted to it for $70K, let alone $80K! They're taking the piss

If I'm spending this sort of money for dual cab ute I'll have a Ford Ranger Raptor thanks – you can see where the money has been spent on that thing

If I'm budget-restricted, then I'll go for whatever's the best deal at the time. There's a reason Mitsubishi sells shedloads of Tritons

Is the Volkswagen Amarok Ultimate or Mercedes-Benz X 350 d better?  You've probably already gathered we've ended up with a fair degree of frustration after spending some time with these two

For the money being charged here it's only right to expect more than what's being provided

If I had to pick a winner it would be the Mercedes-Benz X 350 d simply because it has the edge in safety equipment, not because it is a notably better vehicle than the VW

Indeed, in some ways – engine response and cabin equipment among them – the Volkswagen Amarok Ultimate 580 has the edge

But if I'm going to invest this sort of money in any vehicle then it should at least have up-to-date safety systems…  How much does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz X 350 d Power cost: Price: from $79,415 (plus on-road costs) Engine: 3

Mercedes-AMG C 63 2019 Review – Australia - Duration: 4:28.

Beating heart  The heart of Mercedes-AMG is beating a little stronger today with the arrival of the latest C63 S

Everything in AMG-land orbits around the mid-size sports sedan, coupe and wagon range and, for 2019, it picks up the improvements from the updated C-Class range and adds some extra go-faster tweaking

There is no more power or torque from the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 -- the headline numbers are still 375kW and 700Nm -- but the big change is a nine-speed MCT transmission that brings quicker shifts, as well as softer suspension that makes the whole package more compliant

As a result, it's more enjoyable for more of the time.  AMG models contributed 20 per cent of Mercedes-Benz sales in Australia last year and that number is likely to rise in 2019, with strong demand for the three-strong C 63 range and a considerable order bank

Some eager buyers have been on the waiting list for more than a year. "Historically, in its launch years the C 63 is our best-selling AMG," says company spokesman, Jerry Stamoulis

"If there is one model from our AMG range that is for a repeat buyer, it's the C 63

In 2008, when we launched, it really brought the AMG brand to Australia. They love this car

" The nose that shows  The big visual hint to the updated Mercedes-AMG C 63 is a nose that picks up the styling direction from the Mercedes-AMG GTs -- both two- and (new) four-door

It's more overt, more obvious, but still looks good and is known by insiders as the 'Panamericana Grille' because it has visual ties back to a Benz that raced in the Panamericana road race in the 1950s

But the good stuff in the newest 63 is also picked up from the cooking cars in the C-Class family, which got 6500 changes last September -- right down to three squirters for the windscreen washers in place of the usual two

The external stuff is nothing particularly special with just a general sharpening of the look, and there has been a lot of work on refinement and quality, but the obvious difference is in the cabin

The 10.25-inch media display is conspicuous from the start, and so also is the AMG steering wheel which now has a couple of extra buttons including one for the mode settings and the nine-position traction control

"They operate all the AMG functions without you having to take your hands off the wheel," says senior product manager, John Vasilj

"The full digital media display is AMG-specific. You can configure it in the way you want

It can display g-force, turbo boost, even kiloWatts and Newton-metres at any point in time

" The 2019 Mercedes-AMG C 63 comes standard with AMG sports seats, 20-inch alloys, the AMG performance exhaust and luxury stuff from automatic air-con to Nappa leather upholstery

Let's get going  The old seven-speed auto is gone and the replacement is a nine-speed unit -- not a dual-clutch but an automatic with a wet clutch instead of a torque converter, effectively making it an automated manual gearbox based around an automatic transmission rather than a manual one

The result is ultra-slick shifts and more closely-stacked ratios. There is also a race start setting

The electronic controls of the engine and transmission have been revised and now include both Race and Slippery modes, the softest setting reducing power and flattening the engine's torque curve for snow and other nasty surfaces

The ESC settings are also integrated into the AMG dynamic package, which give more control to the driver and allow more choices of the width of the safety net

The package was first fitted to the Mercedes-AMG GT3 racer, then morphed onto the GT R road car before trickling down to the C 63

"It's to provide greater agility and safety as well. It allows the driver to have a more precise influence on the handling," says Vasilj

The adaptive damping is probably the biggest change, even if there are still three familiar settings for the dampers -- Comfort, Sport and Sport+

It's softer overall, but significantly more compliant in the rear damping when the driver selects Comfort

Softly, softly, then up and away  Like the latest C-Class sedan on which it's based, the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C 63 is a little nicer in most areas, a touch more refined and visually different enough to justify the price hike

Fire the engine and there is the familiar and welcome rumble of an AMG V8, which gets ever fruitier if you touch the 'open-flow' button on the centre console or switch the AMG model to Sport

But the obvious difference, from the first 50 metres, is the softness in the suspension

The Comfort setting really is comfortable and at first it seemed the rear suspension was a touch under-damped because there was lots of travel

What that means, best of all, is that the rear-end soaks up bumps and also the output from the V8

So a city commute will not be a chore, as it was before, and when you tickle the torque it doesn't mean an instant display of traction control warnings or a thump through the back-end

The new nine-speeder sits quietly in the background on light throttle openings, but once you get a bit eager it responds with noticeably sharper shifts

Being honest, the latest C 63 was always a bit of a pain to drive in the city. Now feels just as quick but is more friendly, more comfortable and less likely to trigger a tension headache after a tough day in the office

Into the country  The explosive impact of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 should always be reserved for quiet days and quiet roads, or better yet a racetrack, but as you move the AMG needle up from Comfort to Sport and beyond the car really comes alive

It's a raucous romper that feels just as sharp as in the past, but with a little more comfort and compliance

The combination of more compliance in the rear -- it's best to leave the dampers on Comfort unless you're on a track -- and the slick shift means the car is probably a touch quicker than before but far less demanding to drive quickly

On meandering country roads past the Blue Mountains, after trolling through Sydney traffic, the C 63 comes alive and is wicked quick without complaints

It also turns smartly, even over crests into tightening curves, and the boom of the twin-turbo V8 gets your pulse going

Some people still pine for the old naturally-aspirated V8, but trust us this one delivers the sound and response to please any purist

It's fun to play with the AMG stuff on the steering wheel and watch the various displays turning up their feedback and assistance, but it's simple things like the latest seats and the new AMG wheel -- which is far easier to handle for people who don't have a gorilla grip -- that complete the package

Arrive smiling and happy  The Mercedes-AMG C 63 has always been a landmark car for Benz, and a benchmark for the class

The mid-size German muscle-car has gone from good to better and then best, and the legions of fans of the brand and the C 63 badge keep coming back for good reason

There are design and tech improvements that make the latest C 63 a bit better, for sure, but the chassis retune also makes it considerably more user friendly and easier to live with

These days, that's a winning combination.  How much does the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 S sedan cost? Price: From $160,900 (plus ORCs) Engine: 4

0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol Output: 375kW/700Nm Transmission: Nine-speed MCT automatic Fuel: 10

4L/100km (ADR combined) CO2: 237g/km (ADR combined) Safety rating: Five-star (ANCAP 2014)
