Auto news on Youtube Apr 6 2018

Our hearts started beating faster when Toyota confirmed the GT86 at the end of 2011.

They introduced it in 2012. Of course, the car is still for sale new.

However, there are also cars for sale on the second-hand market now.

The GT86 is a car you, as a petrolhead, should like.

It's rear-wheel drive, boxer engine, and a low center of gravity.

Toyota designed the car in a way that allows you to modify it without this getting too expensive.

The basic package is good.

Like I said, it has a 2-liter boxer engine. It has 197 hp and 205 Nm (151 lb ft) torque.

197 hp... We at Autoblog think it should have more horsepower, but we always think that.

If it had 300 hp we'd want more too, which would make it more fun.

On the other hand, that's what all the tuning options are for.

There are all kinds of turbo kits and such to make this car a lot faster.

The car was introduced in 2012. It got a slight facelift in 2016.

It's still for sale new, with an automatic transmission or a manual transmission.

ENGINES gasoline, performance

About 20 GT86s are for sale in the Netherlands.

You wouldn't expect this of a driver's car such as this, but 3/4 has an automatic transmission;

not a manual transmission. The MTs are rare; only 4 are for sale at the moment.

If you want one, you may have to search longer.

Prices for a second-hand GT86 start at 23,500 euros and go up to 30,000 euros.

A number of cars for sale are new, at a dealer with only 10 km on the clock.

Their prices go up to 55,000 euros for the full-option cars.

PRICES minimum, maximum

Of course there are plenty of reasons to buy a GT86 if you like sporty driving.

It's a sporty-looking car with plenty of possibilities to make it your own.

Another advantage: it's a Toyota, so it won't break down easily.

Of course there are a number of things to watch out for, as with every car.

First, this car was made to hoon and for you to go crazy.

There are people who bought this car, hooned it, and put it up for sale second-hand.

This doesn't have to be a bad thing. The car was made to do that,

but keep in mind that the standard wear parts may wear faster than in a standard family car.

Check the condition of the brakes and the tires and check for former big damages.

There are a number of things to keep in mind with the engine.

If the car doesn't run well and misfires sometimes, the ECU may be faulty.

This problem can usually be solved with a software update.

If this doesn't work, the ECU needs to be replaced.

The right cylinder head leaks a little bit of oil at the head gasket sometimes.

You can see if this is the case. Good.

Next, the fuel pump may make strange noises. That's usually the beginning of the end.

If you hear the fuel pump making strange noises, it needs to be replaced.

The second gear is tricky to engage in some cars.

I have to shift down into second gear now. This car doesn't have that problem.

Finally, the GT86 was designed for tuning, including the engine.

The engine can handle up to 300 hp just fine.

There are cars known to have 500 hp or more.

Those numbers stress everything.

This potentially requires more maintenance and more things can break, etc.

The suspension. The GT86 was sold on Michelin eco tires.

This was done to reduce grip and make it easier to play with the car's balance.

If the car has better tires... Some people changed the tires with better ones for grip.

This makes the car less playful. If you're looking for the playfulness, check if it has the eco tires.

Those make it more fun to play with.

There are people who have lowered their GT86, installed different rims, etc.

This doesn't have to be a problem, but check if it's of good quality.

You don't want Walmart specials or springs of 12 euros a piece.

That way you'll risk something breaks.

There are a number of exterior things to watch out for.

First, it can rust on the lower edge of the side windows.

That's easy to see. If the rust is superficial, it's cheap and easy to fix.

It may be a problem when the rust goes deeper.

The taillights can have a problem with condensation.

If that's the case it should've been solved under warranty.

Check if there's condensation. If so, ask the Toyota dealer if they can do something about it.

The final thing about the exterior. Like I said at the beginning:

this car was designed to hoon, but hooning ends up a tree or in a ditch sometimes.

A little bit of damage doesn't have to be a disaster, but check if it has been repaired correctly.

There should be no strange color differences between the panels.

Finally, the GT86's battery may seem weak.

I looked, but I can't find a clear cause.

Some people blame the battery itself, others blame an alarm system that uses too much electricity.

It's possible. When a GT86 isn't used for a couple of weeks, the battery can go empty.

Toyota replaced the batteries with heavier ones in some markets.

If you're buying a car and won't use it for a couple of weeks, it may be an idea to buy a trickle charger.

These things cost 100 euros and you'll never have that problem again.

Of course it needs to be a possibility.

A few years after driving the GT86 for the first time, it's still a fun, nice, and focussed car.

Everything feels tight and direct.

The gear stick has a short stroke and the steering feels direct.

I still would like more horsepower, but I'm fussy about that.

It's still a very fun car and it's a very good basis for something much cooler.

A number of cars are for sale in the Netherlands.

A manual transmission is rarer, but we found one at Toyota Amersfoort.

This car is silver gray. It may be a bit anonymous, but that may be nice.

It draws less attention from the local authorities.

It has the stock wheels.

It even has mud flaps, so I think it was owned by an older person who drove it carefully.

It does look like that, because it's a very clean car.
