Travel to Louisville, Kentucky to See the Mega Cavern an Underground Bunker - Yahoo Voices - voices.yahoo.com

The subterranean tourist attraction of the Elite Cave Bunker or Mega Cavern is located underground in Louisville Kentucky and open to everyone. These massive bunkers extend underground and were originally a part of a limestone mine and subterranean storage facility. The bunker has virtually 17 miles of passageways and anyone who visits travel the tunnels virtue of SUV type pulled trams.

The caverns or bunkers were originally fashioned after similar caverns in Missouri which run similar ride through excursions. The main draw of the caverns is there sheer enormous size and people are taken with the fact these have been in service for many years right underground Louisville without virtually anyone knowing.
There are many geological stops along the way and the guides give really informative lectures on the mine and bunker storage facility throughout the ride.

Mega Cavern also has a section that was originally designed to help people survive in case of a nuclear attack back in the 60's, much like the old air raid bunkers but on a much grandeur scale. During the Cuban Missile Crisis the bunker ran non stop in preparation in case of a catastrophic event and there is a replica of what it would have looked like in case 50,000 or so people had been ushered down into the cavern during an attack. The sad thing is many visitors realize on the ride that would have meant you would have been chosen in some way or had to have a ticket in order to get into the survival facility because surely that would not have provided survival for all of the Louisville area even during the 60's.

The Mega Cavern was the largest underground survival civil defense shelter during that time and is the largest man made structure in the state of Kentucky. The Cavern is amazing and a unique experience for all ages. The Cavern is open virtually year round from January through October 31st. However anyone looking for information should call 502-855-3580 for information on events and tours. Prices range from approximately 14.00 for adults to eight dollars for anyone under children, however kids under 2 are free. There is also a senior and military discount available, along with group rates.

The Mega Cavern or Elite Cave Bunker runs almost directly below the Louisville Zoo and is really a historic piece of history to all Kentuckians and old war buffs. I am always amazed at the unique spots in this country that most people never would have guess existed. Located just off Illinois Ave on Taylor the Caverns are smack dab in the middle of the city of Louisville and a must see for any tourist.

I know there are many other fallout shelters scattered around the United States however I was astonished that one was so near to where I grew up all this time.
