Known for Their Baths
For us, we were simply going on faith from what one of our friends said - that it was "nice". This friend has excellent taste, so that's all we needed to know! When we got there we learned that they are known for their healing waters and there are several bath houses and spas that focus on giving you an authentic European spa experience. It's these spas that set it apart from other cities.
Great Walking City
Karlovy Vary is also fun to walk around in. When we were there, it was at least -6 Celcius which means that it was quite cold. The fact that I can still say that it was fun to walk around in is saying something - we had to endure a little adversity in order to even do it! Since it was so cold we didn't have a long, meandering walk but it was still quite fun. I can't wait to go back when it's warmer.
Things to Do
As you walk you'll notice the architecture, shops, gardens, and museums. What you do is up to you. What do you feel like doing? We didn't have a chance to shop because by the time we got there and finished lunch, the shops were closed.
Eating in Karlovy Vary
Are you hungry? There are some great restaurants. We went to the Venezia Pizzeria and I had the best grilled trout of my life, and my husband enjoyed Spaghetti Bolognese. There was a "Romania" restaurant next door and a Chinese restaurant down the street from that. Restaurants and eating establishments range from getting a "Doner Kebab" on the street to eating in a 4 Star establishments.
Getting There
The easiest way for us was to take a car but if you have a rental, you'll need to check what the policies are for traveling throughout the various countries in Europe. You can also take a train or a bus. Frommers Online warns against the train from Prague which apparently takes forever, as the route isn't direct. Good to know.
Staying in Karlovy Vary
We only spent a few hours there so I don't know anything about the hotels. I did see hotels with various star ratings, including 4 Star Luxury hotels. My advice to you would be to visit online websites that offer reviews and see what people have to say about their experiences. You can also ask around or book your trip through a travel agent.
Karlovy Vary made for an excellent day trip. I can see us decided to spend a few nights here to take in the whole city, preferably when it's warmer outside!
