Station Square is one of those "can't fail destinations" in Pittsburgh when you aren't necessarily looking for a Pittsburgh cultural experience. While the food, atmosphere, and presence is largely generic and could be found anywhere, the architecture is at least authentic, and the area has enough variety for anyone.
Officially opened in 1879 as a hub for the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad, the terminal was used for bother people and freight, and to this day, freight does run up and down it at intervals, typically carrying a bulk load of coal. When the terminal began to decline in the 1970s, the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation made plans to redevelop the area as a mixed use campus. Today, the area supports numerous bars, nightclubs, restaurants, shops, and even a school.
Station Square is where you can pick up a tour on the Gateway Clipper ships. These ships take you on a tour up and down the river, with possibilities of dancing, eating, or whatever your package entails. They do group charters as well. You can also pick up a duck boat tour through Just Ducky Tours in this location.
Inside the terminal is a mixed use space containing a food court, a few restaurants, and some shops. Catering mostly to the souvenir market, this might be an easy stop if you need Pittsburgh themed gifts. There is also an outside plaza featuring more restaurants.
If you want a really classy experience for the area, than the Grand Concourse is the obvious choice. This magnificent room decorated in the Edwardian style has been turned into a restaurant. The appeal for me is obviously in the atmosphere, but if you like seafood, I've heard very good things about the Chuck Muer restaurant inside.
Finally, there is the nightlife. This is one of the few places in Pittsburgh with a real night scene, including multiple clubs in one parking lot. If you are into that scene, there are a few options, ranging from country to techno. It is up to you to decide what you are in the mood for on any given night, but be ready to elbow around with Pittsburgh's college students. If you are interested in heading down, don't miss out on the Inclines located only a few feet from the shopping areas.
