With more than 40 shops and services, nearly a dozen restaurants and more than 60 sites, attractions and tours, Nauvoo, Illinois is an undiscovered treasure trove of fun.
Tours
There are a number o f tours available so you don't miss anything. Guided walking tours are available for those who prefer to stroll the streets of the past. For another, less strenuous way to see the city, try a horse-drawn wagon tour. Either option will offer a view of Nauvoo you might have otherwise missed. Take a 45-minute carriage ride through wooded areas to reach Inspiration Point, a scenic location looking over one of the widest points of the Mississippi River.
Illinois' Oldest Winery
Baxter's Vineyard and Winery has been in existence since 1857, with a short hiatus during Prohibition. The winery is still owned by a descendant, Kelly Logan, of the original winemaker, Emile Baxter. The winery offers wine tasting and a tour of the vineyard, both free. They also have a wonderful gift shop.
Trails through Nauvoo
The 'Great River Road' trail is an auto route that traces the flow of the Mighty Mississippi River from its beginnings in Minnesota to its end at the Gulf of Mexico. Nauvoo is one stop along this great motor tour.
The 'Looking for Lincoln Story Trail' links 52 historic Illinois communities scattered throughout Illinois. Each has unique stories pertaining to our 16th president to offer and there are more than 215 Wayside Exhibits along the way. Be sure to seek out the site in Nauvoo.
The Historic Village
A large concentration of your visit will likely be spent in the historic village. The village includes more than 40 sites dating to 1840 when Nauvoo was established by the early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Homes, a school, public gardens, monuments, cemeteries and a visitor's center are just some of the places you'll want to check out.
Many shops line the little streets including the Webb Brothers' Blacksmith Shop, the brickyard,, the post office and mercantile and many others. Demonstrations are provided at many of the shops, depicting an earlier way of life.
One of the most inviting aspects about Nauvoo, especially for families or groups planning a visit is that entrance to all the sites and all of the tours are free. The town is very family friendly and inviting. There are shows put on at the visitor center and at the outdoor stage, weather permitting, year round. These are also free.
If you are looking for an affordable and unique vacation stop, I highly recommend a visit to Nauvoo, Illinois.
