Luxury, History Await in Newport, Rhode Island

Winter will be lingering for another month or two, but that makes it the perfect time to plan your spring get away. If you dread the idea of a beach full of co-eds or your typical theme park patrolled by cartoon characters, turn your attention to Newport, Rhode Island.

Newport is a summer tradition of the fortunate and a vacation pilgrimage for many tourists. Yet in spring, the area still has much to offer. Whether you choose to vacation on a budget or overindulge for just a weekend, pack your walking shoes or your best attire (or buy some swanky new duds at one of the boutiques upon your arrival). At Newport's various attractions you will discover gross displays of monetary wealth, and a wealth of natural beauty on coastal New England.

High up on the list of attractions is Cliff Walk. Boasting views of the ocean and the striking grounds lying behind several mansions, Cliff Walk is a walking trail with several access points. If you're up for more of a workout, the trail can be a stunning backdrop for jogging. (Hint: Be careful, some portions of the trail are tricky to maneuver. Maps of the trail will point out the difficult areas.)

Next, take yourself back to a time when income tax did not exist and wealth was tangible at a popular attraction, the Gilded Age Mansions. These grand estates can be toured as a package or individually. The admission price allows you the enjoyment of the tour and ensures that this history will be preserved for future generations. In spring you will likely tour the mansions with few other patrons. Standing alone in a ballroom left to admire crystal chandeliers or envision the estate's original residents is surreal. Your guide at most properties is a leisurely hand-held audio tour that allows you to soak in as much or as little history as you have time for. Be sure to take a minute and let yourself imagine what once was.

From seasoned Newport tourists to the local innkeeper, anyone will tell you that the Ocean Drive area is a must. The scenery from your vehicle is jaw dropping. Surf crashing into granite, million dollar homes along the beach and expansive views of open sea are breathtaking. Add to this drive a stop at Brenton Point State Park, where you can park for free and cross the street to walk the beach.

The Newport Harbor area is a great lure after a day of sightseeing. Grab a pint at a traditional Irish pub, slow things down with a gourmet seafood dinner or have a decadent ice cream cone at the local parlor. Dining outside might not be an option yet, but cozy atmospheres and harbor views are a pleasant experience in these area restaurants. On weekends some clubs offer live bands or acoustic sets in the late evenings.

In addition to these charms, Newport has many other area attractions and seasonal events. You can visit the county's website for all the information you need to plan your perfect get away any time of year. Chain hotels are limited, but outside of summer there should be more available rooms. Other accommodations include countless inns and B&B's. Keep in mind that most offer large discounts in the spring, which might make even a luxurious suite fit your budget.

You might think that visiting off-season would let you to catch Newport off guard, hiding behind a curtain and blushing as the ocean breeze blows her skirt up. Yet in early spring, as she is polished by her caretakers in anticipation of summer, Newport is still dressed to the nines and welcoming travelers with a graceful curtsy.
