Las Vegas: A Winter Vacation Paradise

Las Vegas offers some of the most unique winter activities in the country. Because of its unique location, there are a variety of places to visit that are sure to please even the most finicky people. Whether you enjoy the mountains, the desert, or the big city, it is all at your fingertips in Las Vegas.

Folks that reside in Vegas often retreat to Mt. Charleston to cool down during the summer months. During the winter it serves as a vacation wonderland, offering a wide variety of winter activities including skiing, sledding, hiking, and some of the most beautiful cabins available for rental. A short ride up Hwy. 95 North and you can arrive at this oasis in the desert in less than 30 minutes. Just be sure your vehicle is equipped with chains, or you are driving a four wheel drive vehicle, as there are often restrictions on traveling to the top of the mountain during hazardous conditions.

Another nearby location that should be on any must-see list of visitors to Las Vegas is the scenic loop in Red Rock Canyon. A favorite destination of hikers, this 13 mile loop becomes a partially snow covered treat to those looking to escape the concrete of the city. A mere $7 will gain your car access to the scenic route where you are encouraged to drive like it's Sunday. Along the way there are numerous pull off points that offer visitors an opportunity to hike, climb, eat, take photos, or even build your own snow man. Keep your eyes peeled for wild horses, desert tortoises, mountain goats, and any of the other of the wild animals that call the Canyon home. Be sure to stop by the visitors center, which offers souvenirs as well as a fantastic educational exhibit that will be enjoyed by guests both young and old.

For those who want to remain inside the city limits, Opportunity Village presents Magical Forest, one of the most unique experiences you will ever enjoy. Opportunity Village is an organization that assists those with disabilities, and its Magical Forest is a Christmas paradise. More than three million lights decorating hundreds of trees welcome those who pass through the gates. For your enjoyment, take a ride on the Forest Express passenger train, take a spin on the carousel, or visit Santa himself. The gingerbread house is a very popular attraction, and no trip is complete without enjoying a warm funnel cake in the Gift Box Cafe. Magical Forest is open nightly from November 20 - January 1.

What makes Las Vegas a fantastic winter retreat is its wide variety of entertainment options. Never is that more apparent than during the winter months. Those who think Vegas is only a place to gamble are in for quite a shock when they discover all the other adventures available to them in such close proximity. Few destinations offer an individual or group so many entertainment options. So if you are considering a winter getaway, look no further than Las Vegas, Nevada.
