How to Replace a National Entitlement Card in Scotland

The National Entitlement Card is proof of your eligibility to travel for free Scotland-wide. Residents of Scotland who are elderly or disabled are entitled to travel for free on Scotland's buses. What should you do to replace your National Entitlement Card if it is about to expire, or if it has been lost or stolen?

Expiration for Holders Over the Age of 60

The expiration date of your National Entitlement Card is clearly printed on the front of your card. If you are over the age of 60, you will automatically receive a new National Entitlement Card in the post a few weeks before your current card is due to expire. There is no need to stop by your Local Authority to replace a card that is about to expire unless you have moved since you received your card.

Expiration for Disabled Card Holders

Those who received their National Entitlement Card due to disability should expect to hear from their Local Authority/SPT about 4-6 weeks before their National Entitlement Card expires to give instructions on how to go about renewing the card. If you have not obtained your National Entitlement Card by the time it is due to expire, contact your Local Authority to find out more about the renewal process.

When renewing your National Entitlement Card, you will not need to complete a new form, but you will need to provide up to date evidence to show that you still qualify for a National Entitlement Card due to disability.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen National Entitlement Card

If your National Entitlement Card is lost or stolen, make sure you contact your Local Authority or Concessionary travel office in your locality as soon as possible, to arrange for a replacement to be issued. Thanks to the electronic system, if a National Entitlement Card is lost or stolen, Transport Scotland can cancel your card in order to prevent fraudulent use by anyone else.

If you are over 60 and your National Entitlement Card is about to expire, you should automatically receive a new card in the post. But if you have a National Entitlement Card due to disability, you will need to provide documentary proof that you are still entitled to a National Entitlement Card. Notify your local Authority or Concessionary travel office as quickly as possible if your card is lost or stolen, so that your card can be cancelled and a new National Entitlement Card can be issued.
