How to Obtain a Free Bus Pass in Scotland

If you are a resident of Scotland, you may be wondering whether you qualify for free bus travel in Scotland. Who qualifies for free bus travel in Scotland and how do you apply?

Establishing Eligibility for Free Travel in Scotland

Scottish residents aged 60 and above are entitled to travel for free on any local bus, as well as scheduled long distance coach services that operate throughout Scotland during the daytime, including during the morning rush hour. Disabled persons are also eligible to travel for free in Scotland.

History of Scotland-Wide Free Bus Travel

Scotland-wide bus travel started on 1 April 2006. This scheme was established to allow eligible residents to travel free of charge on local registered bus services, as well as long distance bus services that operate within Scotland.

National Entitlement Card

Those who are eligible to travel by bus for free in Scotland will need to apply for a National Entitlement Card. This card serves as proof that you are eligible to travel on any scheduled bus service anywhere in Scotland. If you qualify for a National Entitlement Card, you will need to complete application form LS304, which can be obtained from your local authority office such as a library, or a council information office. In some parts of Scotland you can even pick up a form from a Post Office or SPT Travel Centre.

Why is a National Entitlement Card Required?

In order to enjoy the benefits of free bus travel across Scotland, every eligible candidate needs to apply for a National Entitlement Card. Each National Entitlement Card provides a standard branding, which makes it easier for bus drivers to recognise the cards. National Entitlement Cards can also be used as proof of eligibility for other community services that are held at libraries and leisure centres.

Residents of Scotland aged 60 and above, as well as disabled persons, are entitled to travel Scotland-wide at any time of day, including during the morning rush hour, provided they have a National Entitlement Card. Applications are available from local authority offices such as libraries, or a council information office.
