From traveling to London every weekend for a couple of months, it definitely became one of my favorite cities. There is so much to see and do, and I never run out of fun activities. When I first started traveling to London, I made a list of the things I wanted to do. I've been able to check off many!
I'd always heard that The London Eye was a must see, and I couldn't agree more. This 450-foot Ferris wheel provides the most amazing view of London. The carts are large and can hold up to 25 people, so make sure to bring your friends. It takes about 30 minutes to go around once, but it didn't seem that long. I was so busy taking in the sights, the time flew. The London Eye offers a unique advantage for picture taking, and I got some fabulous shots.
The Crown Jewels at the Tower of London are simply amazing! They are kept under lock and key (and armed guards) at the Jewel House. The crowns, swords, robes, scepters and more are like nothing I've ever seen before. The majesty of the pieces is breathtaking. I could easily return again and again to take in these wonders.
For years, I've wanted to see the sights at Kensington Palace. The opportunity to view the state rooms was great. Walking through the halls and knowing that so many members of the Royal Family had walked the same halls was thrilling. I was always hoping to catch a glimpse of "royalty" but had no luck. Maybe next time!
A visit to Big Ben was accomplished during one trip. I was excited to learn you could schedule a time to actually climb the clock tower. But that excitement was short lived once I found out non-residents aren't permitted to take the climb. The clock is still quite impressive and worth going to see.
Westminster Abbey is one of the most visited places in London and usually crowded. This church still has regular worship services so you often see people coming and going for prayer. Having watched both royal weddings on TV, I thought I knew what to expect. But I was very wrong. The beauty of the church has to be experienced firsthand.
Madame Tussauds was recommended by some fellow crew members who had been there. I wasn't so sure about a wax museum as I'd been to some in the states. I'm so glad I listened to my coworkers since Madame Tussauds is completely different from any wax museum I'd been to. From royal figures to super stars to sports heroes, there are hundreds of lifelike statues. It is amazing how real everything looks. The museum was very crowded, but it was worth the wait.
Of course, no trip to London is complete without a trip to Harrods. I couldn't believe how large this store was. There are more than 330 departments and over 1 million square feet of shopping space. There are also 32 restaurants! I'll definitely have to return to sample some more of the local fare. One of my favorite items from Harrods is the annual Christmas bear. I love collecting these, and they are one of the few things I can afford in the store!
There are still so many things I want to do in London. As soon as I mark one thing off, I add another. Oh well, it's a great excuse to continue to visit this remarkable city!
