Cincinnati was also once known as 'Porkopolis,' a nickname both loved and hated by its local residents. Cincinnati's proximity to the Ohio River and fertile Ohio farmland helped establish the city as the nation's primary pork processing center in the early 19th century. Although the pork industry helped establish Cincinnati as an economic powerhouse, images of pigs wandering the streets were considered embarrassing, at times. In spite of this former embarrassment, Cincinnatians today embrace their heritage of pork by patronizing countless restaurants and festivals prominently featuring pork dishes such as traditional German sausages and barbecue.
