A Vacation in Tunica, Mississippi

We had been married for six years, and we had never been on a honeymoon. Immediately after the wedding we went back to our place (we had already lived together for six months) and ordered pizza and watched movies all night. It was our way of celebrating our new life together. Well, that and the fact that we were dirt poor and had the tiniest wedding you could imagine anyway. It was still beautiful and one of the happiest days of our lives, so we didn't much think about it at the time.

So our seventh anniversary was about to roll around and I thought it was going to be yet another year of pizza and movies. What my husband didn't tell me is that he had set the kids up with a sitter and had already booked us for three nights in the Horseshoe Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. I was so stoked! My dad and his girlfriend go to Tunica all the time to gamble and I've wanted to go since I turned 18. This was the best gift ever.

The hotel rates were dirt cheap during the week, so he had us booked for Monday through Thursday. This was going to be our first honeymoon and the first time we had been away from the kids for three and a half whole days. It was going to be great!

When we got there we didn't even really know we were there. The casinos weren't right up on the road like I expected. We didn't have any trouble finding our hotel, though, because everything is so clearly marked. When we pulled up at our hotel I lost my breath. I felt like a little kid that had just pulled into Disney World. It was everything I had expected and more.

It was just starting to get dark so the lights were on. The entire front of the Horseshoe Casino was lit with what seemed like a million bulbs. You couldn't help but notice the thirty story Gold Strike casino directly next door that was glowing gold. I couldn't wait to get inside to see what it was all about.

The parking deck to the Horseshoe is connected directly to the hotel and the casino, so we didn't have to walk hardly at all to get to the hotel entrance. As soon as we walked into the hotel I couldn't help but stand in amazement. It was stunning. There was a huge crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling and the floor was shining so brightly from being polished that you could literally see yourself in it. There were orchids hanging on the wall beside a Starbucks that were bigger than any I had ever seen. The best part of all was the fact that just beyond the elevator to the rooms was the entrance to the casino. This means that I could wake up in the middle of the night and go downstairs to gamble without even taking off my pajamas if I wanted to.

We finally went up to our room and it was just as beautiful. Giant bed with huge pillows, flat screen t.v. mounted on the wall, full marble bathroom, and a huge closet to hang our clothes in. The only problem was the view. We had a perfect view of a brick wall. That's o.k. though, because we didn't plan on staying in the room long anyway.

The Horseshoe Casino was huge and had plenty of slots. The waitresses would bring you what you wanted to drink, even if it was just a soda. When we got bored and didn't win much at the Horseshoe we walked across the street to the Sheraton Casino. It was equally beautiful. In the middle of the building there is a vaulted ceiling with a mural painted on. It's stunning to look at. Well, my husband won a little bit of money at the Sheraton but I didn't so we walked over to the Gold Strike. As soon as you walk into the Gold Strike you can tell it's a little more high scale than the others, but it didn't seem daunting. They treated us the same way at the Gold Strike as they did at the Horseshoe and the Sheraton.

In each casino there were live bands playing that were great to stop and listen to. When we got hungry we would go to the snack bars in the casino where the food was awesome. A little pricey, but awesome nonetheless. I can honestly say that we were never trying to think of something to do.

We ended up visiting all the casinos in Tunica and never really hit big. That's not what we were there for, though. We were there to enjoy each other and seven years of love, struggle, success, failure, and ultimately patience. That's exactly what we did. Our trip was wonderful, and I can't wait to go back.
