Whether you're a college student that visits home every few months or a corporate worker that regularly goes on business trips, it's no secret that airport food is overpriced. While you can bring along things like candy and chips, it's not enough to satisfy your appetite. And bringing along sandwiches and wraps every time gets old. Below is a list of 7 simple meals you can prepare ahead of time at home for your plane ride.
1. Pasta salad
Orzos, bow-tie pasta, and macaroni are good pastas to consider for this salad. Add some parmesan cheese, a little bit of olive oil, roasted bell peppers, and sun-dried tomatoes.
2. Edamame salad
Edamame is a surprisingly filling soybean that is often eaten as a snack. Epicurious has a delicious recipe for edamame salad that includes shredded carrots.
3. Caprese salad
All you need is fresh mozzarella, tomatoes (cherry, grape, or sliced), and fresh basil. Drizzle with just a little olive oil and/or balsamic vinegar if you want. Season with a little salt and pepper.
4. Beet and feta salad
Mix 2 parts sliced or diced beets with 1 part crumbled feta cheese and some tangerine slices. Season with salt and pepper as desired.
5. Fruit, cheese and crackers
Grapes and berries are great choices for fruits because they are low maintenance in that they don't brown like bananas do, nor do they require utensils. Choose cheeses that are less smelly like Swiss cheese since you will be in closed quarters surrounded by other passengers that may not like the smell. Remember to cut the cheese into bite-sized cubes before packing.
6. Miso soup
Bring along a packet of miso soup on your next flight. When it's time for beverages to be served, ask your flight attendant for a cup of hot water. Just add the mix, sip on your soup, and enjoy. Bring along snack-sized packages of nori (seaweed) to use as a topping.
7. Couscous salad
Prepare couscous accoding to package directions. Mix in a few tablespoons of orange juice and olive oil, oregano, parsley, and dried cranberries.
