There were plenty of activities to choose from spread out over the 4-day celebration. Activities for the children included: an Oreo stacking contest, greased pole contest, donut eating contest, chalk art on the sidewalk, Hot Wheels race, and a triathlon (for kids 7-14 year old). The National Quilt Museum also held demonstrations and craft activities for the children.
Activities for adults included the annual Cross River Swim. This is a swimming race across the Ohio River that begins on the Illinois side or the river and ends once the swimmer reaches the food of Broadway St. on the Kentucky side. This race was open to people ages 14 and up. There was also a waitress competition held this year for the first time where competitors showed off their serving skills while completing a variety of activities and courses.
When it came to family fun, the Paducah Summer Festival hit the mark. Down the street from the main activities at Noble Park, hot air balloons filled the sky twice on Saturday. It was a beautiful sight to see as the balloons lifted and slowly soared across the sky heading towards the Ohio River. The main attraction for many families came each night as the sun was starting to go down.
The Summer Festival concert stage was filled every night with talented musicians. Bluegrass sounds were provided by Justin Townes Earl and Bawn In The Mash, Classic Rock by The October and Parrots Of The Carribean, Country by The Craig Russell Band and Ricochet, and Rhythm & Blues by Special D and The Andy Childs Band.
There were many different types of vendors to choose from. Everything from typical fair food and local BBQ, to homemade ice cream and kettle korn. And of course there were plenty of shaved ices go fight off the summer heat. You could also shop at any of the vendors selling items such as kids toys, jewelry, and unique clothes.
The festival wrapped up with a beautiful display of fireworks over the Ohio River.
Mark your calendars for next summer as the Paducah Summer Festival continues to run strong. It's a family event not to be missed.
