Travel Website Review: Frommers.Com - Yahoo Voices - voices.yahoo.com

With the current economic climate, travel websites are very popular, and more travelers are using them to plan their own vacations. Frommers.com offers numerous pages of valuable information on destinations around the world, as well as updates on the latest news related to travel.

The site's arrangement is such that you can browse by destination, itineraries, special deals and news, tips and tools, community forums, and store, where you can order publications relevant to your area of interest.

To start browsing by destination, you will see lists of continents and regions, which further open to other categories of countries and cities. When you research one of these cities, for example, the pages open to an endless amount of information, much of which is directly from Arthur Frommer's current guidebooks. There are also links to top destinations as well as hotels, where you may select major hotels or search specific ones of your choice.

Another area is itineraries to suggest travel ideas for anyone with a flexible schedule and no specific idea in mind. The categories in this area break down to various types of travel based on interests, such as beach, culture, sports, art, road trips. It also breaks down to lifestyles, such as senior, family, solo travel, gay and lesbian, disabled, etc.

Another area of interest is special deals and news where you can read about up-to-date news events affecting the travel industry, as well as take advantage of promotions or special vacation pricing occurring in hotels, airlines, cruises, car rentals, etc.

The community section of the website generates much traffic, and this is the forum or message board where you can read posts by other travelers on very specific topics, such as the locations of ATM machines in Rome, or the cost of a taxi from the port of Genoa to the train station. These are some of the most up-to-date message boards in the travel industry. Sometimes when you click on other website's message boards, the posts are from two or three years ago, so they are not relevant anymore.

Another section of interest on the website is the tips and tools area, where you can obtain the current visa information for different countries, view interactive maps, peruse photos from various vacation spots, post your own photos, and enter travel photo contests. You can review various packing tips in this section as well.

The section titled as store consists of the numerous Frommer's publications, which you can order from this site for direct delivery to your home. Part of any trip usually includes research and these publications and guides make a huge difference in knowing what to expect and where to go, helping you prioritize your trip.

One of the more up-to-date and valuable resources for the tech savvy traveler is the mobile apps section, where you can download applications to your I-phone or I-touch, as well as download podcasts in MP3 format to your computer, where you can then burn them to a CD, transfer to an MP3 player or Ipod.

As with any website, there is a learning curve, and this takes a little time to find your way around, but the information you can glean from the experience is well worth the effort.
