Originally conceived to be the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, La Tour Eiffel was supposed to exist for just 20 years before being dismantled.
During the 2 years of its construction and for some time afterwards it was highly controversial with many calling it an eyesore. It remained the world's tallest structure until 1930 and today it is the world's most visited monument.
Millions of people ascend it every year and take in breathtaking views of Paris from its two viewing levels. In 1999 the Tower was part of France's millennium celebrations and the light display of that time has become a permanent feature.
In 2002 it hosted its 200 millionth visitor. One can only guess at the number of those who became engaged to be married during their visit.
Its special design makes it one of the most easy structure to recognize in the world.
This is the tallest point in Paris, France. Taller than all the buildings of La Défense, aka the business District. This also is the highest observation point all over Europe.
The Eiffel Tower is so famous that it received 300 millions visitors a year !
No trip in Paris can be done without seeing it ! Tickets can be purchased directly at the bottom of the eiffel tower. You can walk from ground to top by feet or by on of the several elevators. Beware that they are 300 steps from first to second level.
