Converting an older HARVESTER'S MERCEDES engine into new one-(with subtitles) NBAE - Duration: 10:26.

today we are going to repair an engine

this is a harvester's engine

It is of the Ford harvester

The engine is of Mercedes

Mercedes 352

These engines work originally very good.

second thing to share is that

this Mercedes 352 engine

the engines used in TATA, manufacturing

TATA bus , TATA cars

it also have the same engine

this is OM 352 engine

some of its parts used, are of TATA

and some parts are used of Mercedes

The available parts are used

first of all , the problem that occurs in this engine is that

originally they work great

but after some use

these engines require overhauling

after overhauling,

sometimes connecting rod ceases

the reason for the ceasing of the connecting rod is

that the rod (which ceases) , we replace it

but after sometime the other rod also ceases.

what happens in it is that

when one of the connecting rod ceases

along with it , some other connecting rod gets crooked

like this one

this harvester's Mercedes 352's connecting rod.

the rod is crooked from here

we'll check the size of connecting rod from here

from this point , the size is zero

the size from these points is fine

but from this side , the size which we have written here

it is +3 hundredth from here

and it is +1 hundredth from here

what happens is that , the connecting rod which gets crooked

if they are crooked within 1-1.5 hundredth

then there is no issue

but if the connecting rod is crooked within 3-5 hundredth

then when we fit those connecting rod

so due to the begin of connecting rod getting crooked

then the oil film which is to be made between piece and rod

it isn't uniform

the oil traffic,which has to move around the four corners

which has to safe the crank and the piece

if its distance is less from here

then the oil traffic here would face the blockage

and only that much oil traffic will move

on this area, the oil will only flow that much

here I am comparing traffic with oil

oil would only flow in the provided space here

if there is uniform space here

so then the traffic moving around, the oil molecules

will move properly

and due to that the piece won't be damaged

and its heat will also transfer

as it is an older engine, either we could replace all rods

or else we can grind this difference of 3-4 hundredth

and with the help of Marcel gauge, will share with you the method to repair it

some people will think

when this genuine engine works

if there 1-3 hundredth difference

it can work fine, yes it can

but the point to be noted is that

when these main begin

what happens is that when a soft metal main begin is fitted in engine

then if it is 2-4 hundredth crooked

so the place where crankshaft hits the piece

then we have to even the rod by grinding

if you don't even out the rod of hard piece

because hard piece will also collide with crankshaft

and then due to colliding, the rod will generate heat

and begin may cease

I'll now differentiate between the material of both pieces

these are new pieces

these new ones are of KS Germany

because technology changes

sometimes pieces are made soft and sometimes hard

some companies still manufacture soft metal pieces

at the lower bottom ,there is steel

and above it is copper coating

and above the copper coating ,is antimony and lead

if there is some silver content in upper coating

then this coating is soft

and if lead content is higher

if lead and silver content decreases

then the piece becomes a bit hard due to that

and in some engines , this coating is sometimes hard

if you fit hard coating ones, and our rod is even a little bit crooked then

your engine will cease

if the piece are of soft coating

and the rod is little crooked or as much as there is coating on it

then there would be no issue with your engine

therefore , it is better to make this rod uniform

so a hard metal piece can be used

and a soft metal piece could even fit better

I'll show this piece now

that which type of material are they

these are new pieces

these are KS standard Germany pieces

which are available in market here

the better Gleco pieces are more harder than this

I'll check this piece by this way

I scratch it using finger nails

I scratch it and with a lot of effort try to peel it

but there are no lines/scratches made on this piece

these are the older pieces

check these older one, these are of genuine engine

when you scratch it this way

you can see the scratches

lines can be seen on it

if you scratch it by pressing hardly this way

scratches will be evident

similarly this is of bigger engine

light marks can be seen on it also

one my students repaired this engine

he overhauled the engine, and when started it

tested load on it and engine ceased

same engine has come to me

we repaired the crookedness of the rods of the engine

ground it crankshaft

used the pieces which were available in market

and when we eradicated the crookedness of rod

that engine worked many years after that

I wanted to share this scenario with you

If the piece are hard then they need to to be within 1 hundredth

we'll check the

size using the Marcel gauge

check using Marcel gauge

check the size from this side too

and after checking , where it is +3 hundredth and +1 hundredth ,we will grind it

we grind it from the same place where rod is in difference

after grinding, check the size on the edge where it was +3 hundredth

and slowly slowly check at every point

you should not grind it more than required

you need

to check it again and again with Marcel gauge

after checking, when this rod is within 1 hundredth

crookedness should not be more than 0.5 thousandth

after grinding this rod,

polish this rod a little

we just do this, that the rod which company fitted in genuine engine

which were less than 1 hundredth crooked

we repair the rod in same size

and do the main line in same way

and do not make the crank tilted more than the company did

and also check the oil pump's face

and adjust all things according to manual's drawings

this would work the same way as Germany fitted one works

and engines would work great
