The Best Way to Meet Disney Characters at Walt Disney World

One of the big things that separates a Walt Disney World vacation from any other family vacation is the fact that kids (and adults!) get the opportunity to rub elbows with some of their most beloved movie characters. Even the animated characters come to life at Walt Disney World to sign autographs, give hugs, and pose for the photographs that have become the most iconic of Disney vacation souvenirs.

Unfortunately, while the Disney characters are one of the best parts about Walt Disney World, they can be one of the most frustrating parts as well. While Mickey and Minnie are fairly easy to find (provided you're in the right spot in the right park), the other characters can be more challenging. Many characters are only out for brief periods during the day and often the less popular characters are switched out from time to time, which means they might not be out at all on certain days. So, if you're trying to track down your child's all-time favorite character and it isn't one of the Fab Five (Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto), you may have a little bit of trouble.

On top of the challenge of locating each character is the challenge you face when you find them. Characters often draw long lines and since the characters are only out for a little bit of time at any given moment, you might even stand in line only to miss them as they say goodbye to everyone and return to Disney's backstage area. For this reason, Disney tries to keep the lines moving as quickly as they can, which mean that park guests get just a little bit of time for a hello and a photo before the character needs to meet another family. For many people, this is just fine, but it can be a bit anti-climactic if you've been running around to try to track this character down.

Luckily, there is an easy and relaxed way to meet some of your favorite Disney characters...but you have to make a reservation. There are multiple dining options that allow guests to mix and mingle with select Disney characters. The characters vary with the location, so if you call ahead you'll be able to get a good idea of who you'll meet. The downside to these events is that you have to plan ahead and schedule them in advance, since they're often booked solid weeks or months ahead of time. So, without a reservation, you'll probably have a hard time getting in. Think of these dining options as private parties...it's a bit of a pain to get in, but once you're in you'll be glad that the crowd is limited and you have plenty of time to meet and greet the characters. Plus, you get to enjoy that great Disney food!
