Best Spring Break Destinations on a Budget

Spring is one of the best seasons to travel. Not only is it less congested, but the weather is milder in most destinations. This shoulder season is a great time to travel if you're on a budget. Instead of heading to typical go-to destinations for Spring Break and paying a premium, head to these pre-summer getaways for a less expensive alternative.

Bahamas - The Bahamas in one of the most affordable spots in the Caribbean. With lots of daytime beach activities and a vibrant nightlife, it is easy to see why this is a spring break favorite. Places that are most accessible from the U.S. and have the cheapest flights are Nassau and Paradise Island. Book at an all-inclusive resort for the cheapest rates. For a great deal, book a room at the Comfort Suites Paradise Resort which gains you full access to all the facilities (spa, pools, water slides, river rides, Dolphin Cay and Aquaventure) of the adjacent Atlantis Resort and Casino without paying for their more expensive accommodations.

Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico, the Island of Enchantment is a great alternative to more expensive destinations like Cancun. Just like typical spring break destinations, Puerto Rico has a plethora of beaches and a decent collection of bars and nightspots that play local music. For a unique experience, head over to Vieques beach at night and watch the water and sky emit a bluish glow which comes from the microorganisms that live there. Accommodations in Puerto Rico are cheap and flights especially from the East Coast are affordable as well. For good shopping deals, head to the outlets of Calle del Cristo in San Juan.

Destin, Florida - Described by Frommer's as "drastically unappreciated", the Florida Gulf Coast is a great spring break destination for the budget-conscious. Destin, one of the many beaches that make up Florida's coast line is unique in that it is both a sleepy fishing town and a flamboyant vacation spot. Head to its pristine white shores for some R&R or opt for other activities such as golfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and deep-sea fishing. There are numerous hotels around the area and some are inexpensive. Try to get a flight at the airport in Panama City since these are the cheapest.

Sonoma County - A dynamic wine region, Sonoma boasts beautiful landscapes and a laid-back atmosphere. Besides wine tastings, people come to Sonoma for the dining and gourmet markets. Eat at the girl & the fig for some rustic French cuisine or head to their Farmer's Market for artisanal ingredients. If you are on the hunt for antiques, Sonoma is a great place to find deals. For this wine country in northern California, spring break falls within their shoulder season. Come here between April and May, to avoid large crowds and avail of reasonable rates.

Chicago - For a big-city getaway, head to Chicago. This city is more reasonably priced than its big-city counterparts. With average temperatures of 60 degrees and flowers blooming, you can enjoy a day outdoors. Spend a day at Lincoln Park Zoo (it's free!) or take a stroll at the Gehry-designed Millennium Park. Pay a minimal fee to visit its world-class museums along the lakefront and window shop along Michigan Ave. Don't forget to eat a Chicago pizza at Giordano's if you want one of the best in town.
